What's the deal with cookies?

The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is an EU law that protects user data privacy. Live since May 25, 2018, it covers any organization handling personal data of EU residents, no matter where they're based. If your site processes data from EU users, this regulation is a must-follow. Here's how to comply:

No more implied consent: Simply visiting a site isn't enough for consent. Cookies can't be loaded immediately on the first landing page without user approval.
Browser settings aren't enough: Users must be able to withdraw consent as easily as they give it. Telling users to block cookies via browser settings doesn't cut it, as it's too complicated and ineffective for non-cookie tracking.
Free choice is key: If users don't have a real choice, there's no valid consent. Users who don't consent must still have access to some services.
Always-available opt-out: Even after getting consent, users must have an easy way to change their mind. Withdrawing consent must be as easy as giving it.
Action before cookies: Users must be given a chance to act before cookies are set on their first visit. Simply continuing to browse after a notice doesn't count as valid consent.
Specific consent for different purposes: If your site uses different types of cookies for different purposes, you need separate consent for each type.
